Great first post, Michael! Welcome to talkobjectivism.com! I'm excited to read more of your posts. :)

I get frustrated with the state of our national political options too, which is why I would urge you to funnel your frustration into local politics (which is honestly not any less frustrating). Yes, I'm going to vote in the national election, but I have never felt as passionate about presidential elections as I do about voting for my local public servants. I at least get the sense that I am able to make a difference on this level, a difference that could someday snowball into one felt nationally.

Keep up the good work!

Hey, I really like your podcast. It reminds me soooooo much of when I started listening to The Infidel Guy (an atheist radio show) earlier this decade. I hope you get as big as he did.

I am sorry to hear that, but keep talking about Objectivism. The more people that talk about it, the better. Cultural change will not happen over night.

I am only in high school, but I went and asked a couple of my friends if they have heard of it. Some of my closer friends have because I have mentioned it before, but the majority sadly have not.
Unfortunately most of them are not interested in learning either.

> "For example, religion advocates faith, mysticism, and altruism."

Ayn Rand, in her speech at Yale University in 1960, notes that reason and mysticism are opposites, and that faith is one _kind_ of mysticism. (See Ayn Rand, "Faith and Force," reprinted in _Philosophy: Who Needs It_, pp. 75-75 (hb).) In that light, I would characterize religion as advocating two worlds (natural and supernatural), mysticism, and altruism.

Mystics differ in their particular claims to having an avenue to knowledge outside reason: faith, instinct, revelation, intuition, revelation, and "just knowing." Of course, some mystics might claim two or more forms of mysticism.

In Colorado, we found that by focusing on a specific issue of importance to people (health care), we could really inject our ideas into the debate.

The Freedom and Individual Rights in Medicine (FIRM) is not an Objectivist group, but a an ad hoc group of the type recommended by Ayn Rand in "What Can One Do?" (Philosophy: Who Needs It). The founder Lin Zinser, is an Objectivist, as are several members. Here is what we accomplished in our first year.
